Topic #1
{***}ArtCustomer is the king of store. When we are at any store, customer is the one who wants to spend money for high quality, cheapWChoice merchandises and we want better services for goods after we purchase something. Between U.S. and Korea, there are different services that are provided from clerks to customers and services about merchandises. I have some experiences after I came to America, and I've learned the differences between Korea and America aboutWChoice equality, directness and assertiveness from my unexpected experiences.
First, every Americans haveSing/Plu their own rights to be a part of society and it is equal to every single person. A few months ago, I went to Best Buy to buy a speaker for my desktop, and I didn't have any knowledge which one is better to my budget. I needed an adviceCount/Non-Count and information to get a good speaker, but when I looked around at the computer section, nobody was there, so I waited around 5 minutes. A few clerks showed up, but they seemed toSpl busy with anotherSing/Plu customers. Finally, one guy took care of meAwkward and he just told me which one is the best selling speaker and immediately disappeared. According to the article, "American values and Assumptions," Gary Althen discusses that American clerks, like other Americans, have been trained to believe that they are as valuable as any other people, even time in an occupation that others might consider lowly. However, it is different in Korea. Every KoreansSing/Plu think customer is the king in the store.{1} If I go to buy something, {***}Artclerk followS/VAgreement me {***}Choppywhat are my interests or price that I can spend. Sometimes they offer free food while I'm shopping. They are so kind and makesWChoice people to buy something even people don't need it, but for Americans, it is different matter. Americans do not care much about customers. Especially, TheyCapitalization do their work but they look lazy to Koreans.
Second, Americans can talkWChoice anythingAwkward if something they dislike happens, and they cannotWChoice mask their emotional responses. According toPreposition the article "Americans Values and Assumptions," Gary Althen discusses that many Asians feel embarrassed around Americans who are exhibiting a strong emotional response to something. In my experience, one day I played basketball at a park. There was 5 guys, so we played 3 on 3 half court game. I saw their eyes that told me like " Do you even know how to play?" However I played very well and made almost every shot. My mark man was taller than me but he couldn't follow my speed. After we finished game he kicked the ball and yelled bad words himself. I felt it was rude, but I've seen many Americans do like that.{2} If this kind of situation occurs in Korea, Koreans feels that an opponent wants to fight. It can make people to be uncomfortable, so Americans have to care more about other people, because society is not for only one person. Everybody have to collaborate with each other.
In the U.S., there is equality in everyWChoice parts of society thatConj/Trans everyone is equal evenConj/Trans they are different level in the society. ItWChoice is a good custom that Korean culture has to follow. In Korea, people who are rich can do almost everything they want. However, Americans have to consider that their irresponsible freedom makes other people sickWChoice. Sometimes people need to be taciturn even they get unfairness, because it can make other people to be comfortable. In addition, we need to help each other in order to continue our relationship with other people around the world.
