All Souls Day

There is an important holiday in Brazil, it is about a Christian religious holiday and it is celebrated on november 2nd . People celebrate it going to cemetery where they visit their relatives graveyard, bring them flowers and pray. People belive that souls are not cleansed of sin and praying for souls helps to remove the sin and relief them from purgatory. It is really common for people going to chapels praying, there are Masses all over the cemeteries in the country and people sell flowers and candles in front of it. All Souls Day is one of the bigest holiday celebrated in Brazil.

I learned from the webpage 123holiday.net that the holiday of All Soul's Day pays respect and remembers the souls of all friends and loved ones who have died and gone to heaven.

I learned the tradition in the Church of having Masses said for the dead began in the earliest times at the webpage wf-f.org.

A fun holiday in my country

In the Hong Kong we celebrate a holiday call the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular Asian celebration festival. It comes from the old story of Chain.

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The “Chinese Calendar” is different with usual calendar. The Chinese calendar is looking for the true sun and moon. At the Mid-Autumn festival time, the moon is at its fullest and brightest.

In the Mid-Autumn Festival, we have traditional food of this festival is the mooncake. The mooncake is a special sweet cake. That made of ground lotus and sesame seed paste, egg-yolk and other ingredients.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar and is a legal holiday in several countries.

Before I told you that festival come from a old story of Chain.

The earth once had ten suns circling over it, each taking turn to illuminate the earth. One day, however, all ten suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. Houyi, a strong and tyrannical archer, saved the earth by shooting down nine of the suns. He eventually became King, but grew to become a despot. One day, Yi stole the elixir of life from a goddess. However, his beautiful wife, Chang'e, drank it in order to save the people from the her husband’s tyrannical  rule. After drinking it, she found herself floating, and flew to the moon. Yi loved his divinely beautiful wife so much, he did not shoot down the moon.

That festival is very interesting about the come and the celebrate.

There forming a fantastic contrast with the bright moonlight. In East Chia's Zhejiang Province, many people were watching the flood tide of the Qian-tang River on the Mid-Autumn Festival. The ebb and flow of tides coincide with the waxing and waning of the moon as it exerts a strong gravitational pull. In mid autumn, the sun, earth and moon send out strong gravitational forces upon the seas. The south of the Qian-tang River is shaped like a bugle. So the flood tide which forms at the narrow mouth is particularly impressive. Spectators crowd on the river bank, watching the roaring waves. At its peak, the tide rises as high as three and a half meters. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar and is a legal holiday in Hong Kong.

RAMADAN HOLIDAY

The two most important Muslim holidays are Ramadan (Candy Holiday) and Kurban. In this paper, I am going to explain Ramadan.

Ramadan is celebrated by all the Muslims in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. For 30 days, adults don’t eat and drink anything between sunrise and sunset, when they are fastening. The meal had before the sunrise is called suhoor and the meal had after the sunset is called Iftar. Most scientists believe fastening is a very good discipline and good for the health of people. During fastening period, people continue to live their routine life.

At the end of 30 day period, Ramadan Holiday starts. During the holiday season special foods are prepared to celebrate the occasion, which includes Baklava, a national Turkish desert. During the Ramadan holiday, children and the young members of the family visit their parents, older family members and close friends. Ramadan Holiday is the time to strengthen family and community ties. Children love Ramadan Holiday more than adults, because when they visit their older relatives they get money, small gifts and traditional candy “lokum”. In the true holiday tradition, the younger people kiss their elders hands and put their hands to their forehead to show their respect. These visits are usually short because people want to visit many other relatives and friends.

During the Ramadan Holiday, all shops are closed.

RAMADAN HOLIDAY

According to Quran, in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar Ramadan is celebrated. Ramadan holiday, which starts at the end of Ramadan, is also known as “candy holiday.” The main reason why Ramadan Holiday is called “candy holiday” is children receive candies from elder people.

Ramadan is thirty days long.  For thirty days, adults do not eat and drink from sunrise to sunset, when they are fastening. The meal before the sunrise is called sahur and the meal after the sunset is called iftar. During the fastening period, people who are fastening, continue to pursue their routine life. Many scientists believe that fastening is a very good discipline and good step for a healthy life style.

At the end of the thirty days of fastening period, when Ramadan is over, Ramadan Holiday starts. Ramadan Holiday is similar to Christmas where family members try to get together. Children and the young members of the family visit their parents, older family members and close friends. In the true holiday tradition, the younger people kiss their elder’s hands and put their hands to their forehead to show their respect to elders.  These visits are usually kept short in order to visit many other friends and distant relatives. Baklava, which is Turkish national desert, is the main desert served during these visits. Ramadan Holiday visits is one of the reasons why family and friendship ties are strong in local communities of Turkey. Children love Ramadan holiday more than many adults, because in addition to baklava they receive small amount of money, gifts and traditional Turkish candy, “lokum.”

A Fun Holiday in My Country

There are a lot of celebrates holiday in the world.  In Korea, we also have funny

celebrate day.  It is “All Fools’ Day.”  April First, we can be liar and we can do anything

to make funny things. For example, when I was a high school student we changed our

class with the other class.  Therefore, our teacher was surprised and the other thing when

our teacher came to class we was not in class.  We went to a playground and we played

soccer with the other class.  When I was a teenager, I really enjoyed “All Fools’ Day”

with my friends.  However, after twenty years of age I do not really enjoy “All Fools’

Day” because now it is very silly thing for me.  In Korea, we think that “All Fools’ Day”

is not really important day so “All Fools’ Day” is not holiday in Korea.  Here is web site

about “All Fools’ Day” http://www.novareinna.com/festive/allfool.html.  If you want to

get more information, go to that web site and you can check.

April Fool’s Day

There are a lot of celebrate holidays.  Each celebrate holiday has different meaning.

This celebrate holiday, April Fool’s Day, is we can practice practical jokes to our friends,

of victims and gift each other gag gifts and then when the victims are taken in by surprise,

all the witnesses shout “April Fool” at once.  Children love to use the opportunity to

prank their classmates and even their school teachers.  For example, one common trick is

pointing down to a friend’s shoe and saying, “Your shoelace is untied.”

Amazing contests of April Fool’s Day.  www.thefoolsday.com says that on 1st of

April 1998, WASR aired an announcement in the morning that at Baltimore’s inner

Harbor, constellation Restoration committee has dug up a box of gold and has decided to

spend some of it on the repairs of the old vessel and distribute rest of it to the residents of

Maryland.  The only paper that was required to gain a free gold coin was a valid

Guayaquil’s Independence: A National Holiday

Many tourists know that Ecuador is well known for its beautiful city Guayaquil, which it is often referred to as “La Perla del Pacífico”  (The Pearl of the Pacific).  It is here where Spanish recognized Ecuador’s strategic location.  Guayaquil’s treasure lies in its deep water port on the River Guayas which links to the Pacific Ocean.  On July 25th, 1537, Francisco de Orellana founded Santiago de Guayaquil on the Barrio Las Peñas which is now a national heritage site.  The Spanish colonizers established a shipyard to build the immense ships that sailed to Europe with gold and silver.  This is why pirates saw Guayaquil as a treasure.  For three centuries Guayaquil was conquered and ruled by Spaniards. But, on October 9, 820, Guayaquil sought independence from the Spaniards. A  group of civilians supported by soldiers from the "Granaderos de Reserva", a Peruvian battalion quartered in Guayaquil, overwhelmed the resistance of the Royalist guards and arrested the Spanish authorities. Guayaquil declared independence from Spain. José Joaquín de Olmedo was named "Jefe Civil" of Guayaquil. Today, “Guayaquileños” celebrate their independence by having a general international industrial fair, concerts, dances, parades, sport events, regattas, exhibitions, and many artistic shows.  Many of the dances, concerts, and regattas take place at the “Malecon Simon Bolivar.”  The Malecon streches many blocks.  It looks like a long corridor and at night in celebration of the festivities; it is decorated with beautiful lights.  While enjoying the celebration, one can go to the different restaurants that are along the Malecon’s pier (for example at the boats that are at the pier).    Guayaquil is really a city of marvelous places to see. Even during its Independence celebration Guayaquil, the Pearl of the Pacific shines with lights and decorations while the official Guayaquil’s music band plays to entertain the people on the streets and reaffirming Guayaquil’s right for independence.

Coming of Age Day

The age of majority in Japan is 20 years old. We can drink alcoholic and smoking but also we have to pay tax and have a franchise. We have to raise our consciousness in our life from 20 years old.

We have one of a traditional holiday call “Coming of Age Day” on January 8th and have ceremony call “Seijin Shiki” that is since 1180. This ceremony is from Heian age. At that time we called “Genpuku” that is for majority of 15 years old. Go age little by little, we change age of majority

The “Seijin Shiki” covers all those who will reach this age during the current school year, which runs between April and the following March. The ceremony is generally held in the morning at local city offices and all young adults who maintain residency in the area are invited to attend. Government officials give speeches, and small presents are handed out to the new adults. The ceremony is different with each area and it is very enjoyable.

Many women celebrate this day by wearing Frisode which is a special kind of kimono. Since most are unable to put on a kimono by themselves due to the intricacies involved in putting one on, many choose to visit a beauty salon to dress and to set their hair. A full set of formal clothing is expensive, so it is usually either inherited or rented rather than being bought specially for the occasion. While men sometimes also wear traditional dress (dark kimono or Hakama), or most men now wear business suits instead.

After the ceremony, the young adults often gather in groups and go to parties or go out drinking alcoholic. Young women not used to wearing the zori slippers can often be seen limping as the afternoon wears on and evening approaches. Later in the evening, it is not unusual to see wobbly young adults staggering in the trains, heading home after a day of celebration.

A Fun Holiday In My Country

In the Korea we celebrate a holiday called “new year’s day”.  New year's day is called "seol" or "seol ral". It is a very important holiday. "Seol" means 'to be careful', and some says that it means sadness. Others say that "seol" derives from "nat seol da", which means to be unfamiliar. New Years's day can be called "Won Dan", "Won Il", "Shin Won", which are words of Chinese origin. It's also called "jung wol cho harut nal". "Jung wol" means 'January'. "Cho", 'the first', "harut nal", 'first day'. These are solely Korean words.

"Chesa" or the offering to ancestors: These offerings in holidays are called "chare" because it is served with liquors and teas. New Year's day is not an exception.Women get busy preparing the food from the previous day. They make "ttok", "garettok", fried meats. They buy fruits, clean the fishes and so on. They spend almost the entire day in the preparations. Nowadays even the dumplings are made at home. The food prepared the day before is placed on the altar. The difference is that instead of rice, as in any other "chesa", on "seolnal", "ttokuk" is on the offering table.

Kite flying, yut game, top-spinning, snow sliding, etc. are the usual entertainment. However, yut game is probably the most popular among them. Yut is one of the traditional Korean games that can be played anywhere. It's especially popular on New Year's Day. It is customary to play this game from New Year's day. When did this game start? The answer is the first century! It's said that it was not a game at the beginning. In the past "yut" was to know about the fortune in the farming. Some of it remains nowadays but it is not widely known. Today it is taking its place as a game.

Songkran Festival

Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is MahaSongkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city. The most-talked out celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festivalab

The values for community is to provide the opportunity to create unity in the community such as to jointly acquire merits, to meet each other and to enjoy the entertaining events. And for the society value is to create concern upon environment with cooperation such as to clean houses, temples, public places and official buildings. Thais value the religion bye means of merits acquisition, offerings alms to monks, Dhamma Practice, listening to sermon and monks-bathing.

Songkran is a Thai word which means "move" or "change place" as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.

Songkran Days

Songkran Festival, April 12-15, is the traditional Thai New Year. This is the time for Thais to pay homage to Buddha images, clean their houses, and sprinkle water on their elders . Anyone who still on the streets is likely to get a thorough dousing of water, all in good fun, but also quite welcome at the peak of the hot season The festivities at school started with a small sketch to show the students the real meaning behind Songkran.

And then we have, students lined up to pay respects to the Buddha  and then to the teachers by pouring rose scented water over their hands.

Even the teachers took part in the ceremony. During Songkran, all of the offices and schools were closed and people celebrated for almost a week in some places. Many of our peoples went out on the back of pick-up trucks armed with buckets of water and water guns. Others stationed themselves on strategic intersections in order to douse motorcyclists or any motorist with their windows wound down. No-one complained about getting wet as April is very hot.

New Year Celebration in Russia

My favorite holiday is New Year.  It is the nicest holiday in Russia and Ukraine.  It celebrates traditionally in the end of each year.  Russia began celebrating New Year as separate holiday in 1700, when, on the order of Czar Peter the Great, Russia started to count the new year as beginning in January rather than September, as had been done previously (wscsd.org/ www ejournal/article.php).  All people are wating for the end of the year because they enjoy celebrating of the end of old year and beginning of New Year.  Everyone try to prepare for this holiday in advance.  Men, usually, buy Christmas Treees and presents.  Women are shopping a lot for all family and friends, especially for kids.  Moms and dads are asking their kids what they woulkd like to get for New Year.  Kids usually make a lot of wisshes.

The celebration of New Year in Russia and Ukraine is very semilar to the celibration of Christmas in America.  However New Year holiday in My Country is not a religious holiday like Christmas in America.   After the Russian Revolution of 1917, all religious holidays, including Christmas were banned, so to many Soviet people the New Year was the biggest holiday of the year. Since 1992 Christmas has been openly observed in Russia and now the New Year's celebration usually flows directly into the celebration of Russian Orthodox Christmas observed on January

(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Russia)

The New Year’s dinner is very important part of celebration.  Russian people love to eat and drink.  Always the table is full of different kinds of food.  Very often, afterdinner, people sing and dace.  Exactly at 12 p. m., everybody drinks Shampagne, hug, kiss, and wish the best for each other.  At the end, everone open presents.

New Year is best holiday of the year.  I used to love it very mach.  I hpoe one day I’ll go back to russia and celebrate it with my friends.  I’ll be very happy!

famous. People who don’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend at that day they eat Black

Noodle because most celebrate days mean couples but the only that day is single day.

We don’t get the day off work and Black Noodle day doesn’t celebrate old people. Young

people just celebrate themselves. Black Noodle day is in April 14 every year. People say

Black Noodle day came from noodle restaurants.

Holiday - About Halloween

I survey the halloween day, on October 31, Americans celebrate Halloween.

Halloween means holy evening in the United States, Halloween is very popular with chldren they are very excited on Halloween day they wear masks and special costumes them they go from house to house and say, "Trick or treat !" people give them candies and cookies

It is celebrated in much of the Western world, though most common in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada and sometimes in Australia and New Zealand.

Irish, Scots and other immigrants brought older versions of the tradition to North America in the 19th century.

Most other Western countries have embraced Halloween as a part of American pop culture in the late 20th century.

The term "Halloween"  before the feast of All Saints (an important day in the Christian calendar), which used to be called "All Hallows" derived from All Hallowed Souls. In Ireland, the name was Hallow Eve and this name is still used by some older people. Halloween was also sometimes called All Saints' Eve. Halloween is also called Pooky Night in some parts of Ireland, presumably named after the puca, a mischievous spirit.

Halloween is sometimes associated with the occult.

Halloween is very popular with children, they are very excited on Halloween day. They wear masks and special costumes them, they go from house to house and say “Trick or treat” and then people give them candies and cookies. Pumpkins were cut with faces representing demons and was originally intended to frighten away evil spirits. Why they did this behavior? Because before Christianity, people in Europe believed that on October 31 ghosts of dead people came back. People scare the ghosts, so they dressed like devils and were very noisy. Halloween is celebrated in most parts of the Western world, most commonly in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Peru, and with increasing popularity in Australia and New Zealand. In recent years, Halloween has also been celebrated in parts of Western Europe.Halloween originated under a different name as a Pagan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain with mainly Irish and Scots and other immigrants transporting versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Bbae-Bbae-Lo Day

People in Korea celebrate a day called 'Bbae-Bbae-Lo Day,' when people give korean snack to their beloved ones. It is similar to Valentine's Day; however, it is different from Valentine's Day because it was first created about ten years ago from the marketing of the company that manufactured Bbae-Bbae-Lo. Although it just started off from the marketing, it now has became a widely known annual event that lovers celebrate. It is on November 11th every year. The reason why it is on November 11th is the digits of November 11th, which is 11.11. represents the shape of the snack, Bbae-Bbae-Lo. Some people may think that it is silly to follow the company's marketing and make it into such a one of biggest national annual event. However, people think that being able to share and confirm love with their beloved ones is more crucial to them. They think that they just have earned another day to celebrate their relationship. Bbae-Bbae-Lo Day also has great effects on society via economy, and atmosphere of cities. In conclusion, it is a day when people try to confirm their loves and celebrate. I have earned the above information from the website called pe-pe-lo(http://www.pepero.co.kr/pepero/culture/culture.jsp) and Naver KIN(http://kin.naver.com/db/detail.php)

CARUARU - CAPITAL OF THE "FORRÓ"

This is a well deserved title that Caruaru holds proudly. Besides being the commercial pole of Pernambuco's inland, leader of about 40 municipalities, it is a incontestable reference within the northeastern folklore and cultural scenario.

Among the so called "inland parties" where the main characteristic is the spontaneity, the parties that compose the June cycle are more and more remarkable as time goes by, and today they are an event nationally and intentionally known.

As important as its function of preserving, maintaining alive and divulging the northeastern popular culture, the Caruaru's June parties - the authentic expression of its hospitable and joyful people - have also the potentiality of leading the tourist flow in the region.

The city transformed in a huge hamlet hosts thousands of visitors which number has been considerably increasing and reflecting directly not only on the local economy but also warming up and discovering other neighbor poles for the market.

Those approaches only would be enough to justify such success. However such peculiar manifestation provides other pleasant surprises revealed by its colors, forms and rhythms of this charming city of inviting weather where you can enjoy the "BEST SAINT JOHN'S PARTIES OF BRAZIL". http://www.psg.com/~walter/junina.html http://www.brasilfolclore.hpg.ig.com.br/

Nooroz-The Iranian New Year

Norooz, in word, means “New Day”. It is the new day that starts the year, traditionally the exact astronomical beginning of the year. Second is called “Saal Tahvil”. Norrooz with its’ uniquely Iranian characteristics has been celebrated for at least 3000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrian.

Before the new Year, they start cleaning their houses(khanh tekkani), and they buy the new clothes. But major part of new year rituals is setting the “Haft Seen” whit seven specific items. All the seven items start with the letter”s”. These seven things usually are: seeb (apple), sabze (green grass), serke (vinegar), samanoo (a meal made out of the wheat), senjed (a special kind of berry), sekke (coin), and seer (garlic). After the saal tahvil, people hug and kiss each other and wish each other a happy new year. Then they give presents to each other (traditionally cash, coins or gold coins), usually older ones to the younger ones.

The first few days are spent visiting older members of family, raisins and friends. Children receive presents and sweets. Traditionally on the night before the new year, most Iranians will have sabzi Polo Mahi, a special dish of rice cooked with fresh herbs and served with smoked and freshly fried fish.

The 13th day of new year is called “sizdah bedar” and spent mostly outdoor. People will leave their homes to go the parks or local plains for a festive picnic. It is a must to spend sizdah bedar in natire.

Another tradition of the new year celebrations is “chaharshanbeh soori”. It takes place before saal tahvil, at the last Wendnesday of the old year, well actually Tuesday night! People set up bon fire, young and old leap over the fires with songs and gestures of merriment like: (sorkhi-e to az man) Give me ypur beautiful color)

(Zardi   man  az  to) And take back my sickly pallor!

NOROUZ IN IRAN

In harmony with the rebirth of nature, the Iranian New Year Norouz, always begins on the first day of Spring which is March 21st of each year. Norouz ceremonies are a symbolic representation of two ancient concepts. About 3000 years ago at the end of Winter, the Persian religion Zoroastrian, named a festival in honor of its founder Zoroaster called "Farvardgan.” This festival was named Norouz by the mythical Persian emperor "Shah Jamshid" (500 BC). The festival lasted for 10 days and took place at the end of solar year. Norouz in Farsi means "New Day."  Some of the activities during Norouz are spring cleaning, buying new clothes, painting eggs, family reunions, giving presents, and visiting neighbors and friends. At the end of Norouz, there is a picnic on the 13th day of Spring. For example, I celebrated this special day in my parents’ house; I celebrated it by decorating my house, setting up my family’s altar, and going to Tet festival. Also, I celebrated this special day with my parents, sisters, brothers, and friends. Furthermore, the special foods that my family, friends, and I ate were jams, candies, square cakes, lotus seeds, red color seeds, watermelons, etc. Next, everyone in my country celebrated it. For one thing, people got the day off work. Moreover, we celebrated this holiday because it was the most important celebration for us. As you knew, it was important in my country’s culture. Another was it didn’t have any religious meaning, but I followed Buddhism; therefore, I celebrated all of anniversaries to Pagodas as a matter of fact. In fact, on this day, if my family had enough money, I could have new clothes. They should be Chinese clothes or Vietnamese clothes which were national dresses. In addition, I could give lucky letters to my nephews and nieces and received lucky letters from my old relatives such as my mother’s aunt, mother’s uncle, aunt, and parents.

A Fun Holiday in my Country

In Venezuela’s country we celebrate a holiday called “Carnival o Carnaval”. It is an annual Cristian Celebration. It occurs in February o March. It typically involves a public celebration combining some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations. Also, disguises, sorprises and games. In all the states, children and adults enjoy this popular calebration.

Each region has its special way to celebrate the Carnival. In some places, like the oriental part of the country, there are theatrical, musical and choreographic manifestations.

Once the more faimous is the Carnival of The in Carupano, in Sucre States. The first of these parties was carried out in 1873, when the president, for that moment, Antonio Guzman Blanco, intented to put and end to the constant aggression of the carnival whith water and give him a new kind of celebration: the processions.

Today, we celebrated this holiday with water and many aggressive and funny elements like eggs or paintings. The people don’t have work for this time. And everybody enjoy a lot that party.

A Fun Holiday.

In Venezuela, where I come from, we celebrate a fun holiday called: “Carnaval” (or Carnival.) around February or March. It is a Christian Festival Season.

In Venezuela there are different ways to celebrate. In the Western part of the country there are parades with folkloric musicians and dance groups. In the Eastern part there are parades of people in costumes and masquerades. Always this is a public party on the street.

The most famous carnival in Venezuela are: “Carupano” in the State Sucre, and “Callao” in State Bolivar.

Everywhere the people enjoy this holiday, dancing or drinking. Also, the children throw water ballooms and eggs at everybody.

Finally, some people just go to the beach or the mountains during this festival, to find relaxing.
