Classroom policies and procedures

Attend every class and arrive to class on time.

If you have to miss a class, please arrange to contact one or more classmates to find out what you missed, and be sure to find a way to turn in your assignments so that they will not be late.  (A missed class is no excuse for an uncompleted assignment).

If you are absent from 6 classes, you will get a zero for 'attendance & class participation,' which constitutes 15% of your total grade.  Every 3 times you are late, I will consider it equivalent to 1 absence.  If you are more than 40 minutes late, I will consider it equivalent to 1 absence.

Homework will be given regularly.  Some will be graded, but most will be checked in class.  You must complete homework assignments to prepare for quizzes and to be able to participate in class activities.

Much of our classwork will be collaborative; you will frequently be working in pairs or small groups.  I consider these collaborative activities to be an important part of language learning, and I therefore expect your willing participation in them.

A significant amount of our work will be done online, so you will need reliable access to a computer with an internet connection.  There are many computer labs available to students on the SMC campus (click here).  Additionally, local public libraries usually have computers available (though you may have to reserve a specific time).  Santa Monica Public Library | Los Angeles Public Library | Los Angeles County Public Library.

Please turn your cell phone off (or to vibrate) when you are in class.  Do not take phone calls or cigarette breaks during class time.  Please use the restroom before or after class.  Walking in and out of the classroom is disruptive and should be avoided.

No food or drinks are permitted in the classroom, except bottles of water.
