When will Final grades be available?:

I have a deadline of January 2 to turn in the grades.  I'll try to get them in before, but I can't promise that I will.

You can always check Student Self Services to see if your grades have been posted.  But remember, SSS doesn't show you your grades until all of your professors have submitted your grades.

Congratulations class!!!  Almost everyone in the class is passing and can add ESL 21b.  I will turn in permission to add on Thursday morning.

You can look up your current grades according to your SMC ID number here.

You should also have received an email from me returning your essays 2.2 via a weblink.  You should find that I have highlighted problem areas in yellow and made some comments or corrections in blue.  I, of course, did not point out all the problems so be sure to revise and edit carefully.  I expect a polished essay.

Common Essay today

Monday, 11/5

Today I handed out a copy of the article that you'll be reading and studying for the Common Essay.  It's called "Crisis on Campus" and was written by Shari Roan in the Los Angeles Times.

You can download a copy of the article here.

You can download the grading rubric here.

In order to help you prepare for the Common Essay, I have set up a number of discussions on eCompanion.

It would be particularly useful if you are able to effectively and concisely summarize the article.

Therefore, I set up two discussions: one in which you write a short summary of a couple lines and the other a long summary in which you write a full paragraph.  You do not have to do this by Wednesday, rather by next Monday.

I also set up a discussion where you can discuss possible prompts or questions for the article.  What issues does the article raise that you might be asked to write on?

I also set up a discussion open for any questions you might have.  Take advantage of it.

Wednesday, 10/31
On Monday, there will be a vocabulary quiz based on the vocabulary list for Chapter 3 found on p. 318 (allocation ... zero population growth).

Monday, 10/29

For homework, you will write the second draft of the essay you wrote in class today, in response to the following prompt:

Taking into consideration the readings and listenings from Chater 3 of Quest, would you agree that there are effective actions that can be taken to help eliminate world poverty, or is poverty inevitable?

900 word minimum.

Email me your essay as an attachment before Wednesday's class.

Name the Microsoft word file using your first name--the last four digits of your SMC ID #--then "Essay 2.2--ESL21a"  For example:   John--1464--Essay 2.2--ESL 21a

In the subject line of your email, do the same.

You will also be responsible for knowing the meaning of the vocabulary listed on p.317 (Chapter 2 vocab only) and how to use them correctly in sentences.

*Just because I won't be checking the vocabulary notebook anymore doesn't mean that I you can forget about doing vocabulary homework.  On the contrary, it places more responsibility on you to organize your studying.  It is my suggestion that vocabulary should be studied a little every day, rather than for long periods of time.

Please note that for the following listening exercises you can either download the audio files to your hard drive or just play them in your browser.  If you're at a school computer lab, you will need to bring your headphones.

Today in class we took two vocabulary quizzes.

Homework:

No homework,

except for the handful of you who didn't submit your essay to me by email.  Please write your second draft following the rules in the notes for 9/26 below.  Deadline for credit (-10 pts) is at 2:00pm on Wednesday, 10/3.

Everyone should bring a paper copy of their essay to class on Wednesday.

Wednesday, 9/26

Today in class we wrote the first draft of an essay responding to the following prompt:

Please write a well developed essay in which you discuss some of the different functions that symbols may serve in various arenas of everyday life.

Your essay should consist of an introduction, two or more body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

In your introduction, you should try to define what is meant by "symbol" and to develop a thesis statement that serves as a controlling idea for the whole of the essay.

Please include a minimum of 2 references to the texts we read in QRW.

Homework:

  • Catch up in your vocabulary notebook and bring it to class on Monday.

  • You will also be writing a second draft to the essay we wrote in class.

Try not to rewrite the in-class essay but rather start afresh.

I’ll be checking to see that it meets the following criteria:

·   Minimum 800 words

·   Typed, 12 pt font, double-spaced

·   minimum of 3 examples from book;

·   additional text or personal examples okay

·   incorporate appropriate vocabulary

I will be accepting this assignment only via email.  I will not accept excuses of "my computer or internet wasn’t working."  There are computer labs available on campus for your use at the library and the Clayton center.

You must attach your essay to an email and send it to me before 12:00 noon on Sunday.  I won’t accept emails received at 12:01pm or later.

Your attachment should have a file type of either .doc or .rtf so that I can easily open it.   If I can’t open your file, you do not get credit.  I have difficulty opening .docx, .odt, and .wps files; don’t use them.

Name the file of your attachment as follows:

yourname – essay 1.2 – esl 21a

Also put the same info in the subject line of your email message.

***Please bring 1 hardcopy (i.e., paper copy) to class on Monday, as we will be working on it in class.

  • There will be a vocabulary quiz on Monday!

Monday, 9/24

There will be an in-class essay on Wednesday.  Bring a large "blue book."  Review the readings from QRW and associated homework to prepare.   You will be able to use a dictionary of your choice during the essay.  You may not, however, use the textbook.  Instead, you will be allowed to bring 3 pages of notes.   Think about the relationship between power and symbols in human culture.

Last day to get credit for eCompanion "Definition Paragraph" will be Wednesday before class.

Wednesday, 9/19

Today in class we reviewed the diagnostic reading test and discussed the significance of scores received.  We also took the diagnostic essay-writing exam today.

Homework:

  • Log onto eCompanion, open the link to our class, and then click on "Introductions" in left hand column.  Please write a brief paragraph introducing yourself to the class.  Feel free to respond to what others have written too.

  • Take time to review the parts of speech, word forms, and sentence structures.

  • Reread the article on Feng Shui from QRW in Chapter 1.

  • Begin your vocabulary notebook.  Keep a 3-ring binder and use one page per vocabulary word.

  • For each vocabulary word:

    • write the word

    • write the sentence it's in from the QRW reading

    • write the definition. Sometimes definitions of words have more than one 'sense,' i.e., they have multiple definitions.  I only want you to write the definition/sense that is being used in the QRW sentence.

    • Find three naturally occurring sentences that use the vocabulary word/phrase in the same way.  You can do this using a search engine (e.g., Google).  Write the sentences in your notebook.

    • Write 3 of your own original sentences using the vocabulary word and provide enough context in the sentence so it's clear that you understand the meaning of the word.  For example, if the vocabulary word were lawyer, you wouldn't write a simple sentence like My brother is a lawyer, but rather something like My brother just got a job as a lawyer with the District Attorney's Office and has his first court case on Monday.
